About:
In late 2019 I asked my instagram followers for topics to write a song about. I never really intended for any of these to be released as “real” songs, I was mostly trying to do a silly little instagram song writing challenge.
Most of these responses were expectedly light hearted, “write a song about my dog” and “write a song about avocado toast,“ that sort of thing. However, one follower DM'd me a surprisingly personal story detailing how she'd gone to a friend’s show, realized she was in love with a member of the band, and that he would never feel the same way towards her.
I was frankly shocked with how personal and detailed the story was, and with the followers consent, I based "4 Friends Go To A Show" on her story.

Lyrics:
A group chat lights up 4 phones
there’s this show tonight if you wanna go
Lucy says “that sounds alright
we can pre-game at my place if you’d like”
So when the taxi drops them off/they tip him well and split the cost
Single file they walk through the ally/they can hear where the music’s coming from
pay the fee and get your hand stamped quickly with some smearing ink your co-workers will ask about next week
Lucy dashes straight for the bar/dragging Nandi by her arm
Julie and Phoebe scan the crowd/ to see if anyone they knows around
Julie turns to Pheob and says “ lets go/ these things are always better if we can get up close
The band has framed the stage with Christmas lights/ to set the tone
Phoebe tells her self “in through your nose. out through your mouth.” then she smells him. and her heart starts racing.
Phoebe sees him on stage and turns sheet white/Julie had warned her he’d be here tonight
But she had shrugged it off, said it’ll be fine/ We’re both adults and its been a long time
but now the memories, flood her mind/ how she felt so whole when she was by his side
Unwanted scenes from a former life/ that she can’t fight back no mater how hard she tries
All The poetry she wasted on him/ all the letters she wrote but never sent
All the nights spent at the foot of his bed/ a girl can only take so much neglect
He’ll probably try and talk to her after his set/ Saunter up like a wolf and ask “how have you been?”
His girlfriend is here and she look like a bitch/ that’s a little unfair but she’s a little biased
And Julie’s dancing and oblivious/ Phoebe tries to calm down, don’t be ridiculous
He was never even yours to begin with. He was never even yours to begin with.
He was never even yours to begin with. He was never even yours to begin with
